Your Spring Skin Care Checklist: What to Swap, What to Add

Spring skin care isn't about starting over. It's about lightening what you're using, bringing back the gentle exfoliation you probably paused in winter, adding one weekly treatment to speed the transition along, and refusing to let SPF slide as the days get longer. Do those four things this week and your skin will be in a much better place by the time it's properly warm.

By late August, most South African skin is carrying some version of the same problem. If you're on the Highveld, months of dry, cold air have probably left you a bit flaky, dull, and tight. If you're in Cape Town, it's more likely wind and rain that stripped things back while you leaned on heavier, more occlusive products to cope.

Either way, you're now sitting on a layer of built up dead skin, a barrier that's had a rough few months, and a moisturiser that suddenly feels like too much the moment the temperature ticks up. Spring is the natural point to reset that, but it has to be done in order. Strip too fast and you'll irritate a barrier that's already had a hard winter. Change nothing and you'll spend September looking greasy and dull at the same time.

Step 1: Swap the heavy cream, but don't drop the hydration

Winter creams do their job by sitting on top of skin and slowing down water loss. That's exactly what you want when the air is dry and cold. It's also exactly why that same cream starts to feel heavy, sits oddly under makeup, and can contribute to congestion once the weather turns.

The fix isn't a lighter moisturiser that hydrates less. It's a different delivery system. The new Hyaluronic Acid Capsule Cream uses multi weight hyaluronic acid capsules that stay sealed until you apply the product, then burst on contact with skin. That matters because hyaluronic acid loses potency once it's exposed to air, so most creams are already past their best by the time you get to the bottom of the jar. Capsules keep it fresher for longer.

The gel base itself is light. Squalane sits alongside the HA to lock moisture in without adding weight or blocking pores, and allantoin is in there to calm any skin that's still a bit reactive from winter. Applied daily to clean, dry skin, it does the job your heavy cream was doing, just without the layer of heaviness you don't need anymore.

This week:

  • Move your thick winter cream to night use only, or retire it until next winter.
  • Apply a lighter, hyaluronic acid based moisturiser to clean, dry skin every morning.
  • Watch for congestion around the jaw and forehead over the next week. If it clears up, your swap worked.

Step 2: Bring exfoliation back, but ease into it

If you pulled back on actives over winter because your skin felt too fragile for them, that was the right call. It also means you're probably sitting under a few months' worth of dead skin buildup that heavier winter products didn't fully account for. That buildup is a big part of why skin looks dull and flat right now, and why serums and moisturisers don't seem to sink in the way they used to.

Reintroduce exfoliation gradually rather than going back to your old frequency on day one. The 2 Step 8% AHA Peel Pad + pH Balancing Face Mask is built for exactly this kind of reset. The peel pad lifts away dead surface skin, smooths texture, and helps everything you apply afterward actually absorb instead of sitting on top. The pH balancing step that follows brings skin back to a comfortable, settled state rather than leaving it acidic and reactive.

This week:

  • Start with the peel pad step twice this week, not daily.
  • Always follow with the pH balancing step, don't skip it to save time.
  • If skin feels tight or looks pink afterward, drop back to once a week until it adjusts.

Step 3: Add a weekly repair and hydration treatment

Once the dead skin is gone and your daily moisturiser is doing its job, this is the step that actually pushes things forward instead of just maintaining. It's also the newest thing in the Skin Republic range, and it's worth adding now specifically because of what winter does to skin.

The PDRN Face Mask Sheet pairs PDRN with a peptide complex in a sheet mask made in Korea. PDRN supports the skin's own repair processes and elasticity, which is useful after a season where your barrier has been under more stress than usual, and it visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines. The peptides work alongside it to support collagen production and firmness. Together they make the mask feel less like a pampering extra and more like actual repair work.

Wear it for 15 to 20 minutes, don't rinse afterward, just pat in what's left on your skin. As with anything new to your routine, patch test first.

This week:

  • Do one sheet mask session, ideally the evening after your peel pad step.
  • Pat in the leftover essence rather than washing it off.
  • Plan to make this a weekly habit through spring, not a one off.

Step 4: Don't touch your SPF routine, if anything take it more seriously

This is the step people quietly drop when it's still cool outside, and it's the wrong one to drop. From the first of September the days get longer and the sun sits higher for more of the day, which means UV exposure climbs well before it actually feels warm. That's true whether you're dealing with Cape Town's still grey mornings or Joburg's clear blue spring skies.

All the work you're doing in steps one to three, the lighter moisturiser, the renewed exfoliation, the weekly repair mask, is aimed at getting skin back to smooth and even. Unprotected UV exposure undoes that faster than any of it can rebuild. Apply SPF every morning as the last step in your routine, rain or shine, and reapply if you're outside for long stretches in the middle of the day.

Your spring checklist, at a glance

  1. Swap your heavy winter cream for a lighter, hyaluronic acid based moisturiser, worn daily on clean, dry skin.
  2. Reintroduce exfoliation gently, starting at twice a week with a peel pad and pH balancing step.
  3. Add one weekly sheet mask treatment focused on repair and hydration.
  4. Apply SPF every single morning, regardless of cloud cover or how cool it still feels.

None of this needs to happen all at once. Give yourself this week for the swap and the exfoliation, then bring in the weekly mask once your skin has settled. By the time spring is properly underway, your routine will already be there waiting for it.
